The future PANDA experiment with a next generation detector will focus on hadron spectroscopy.
It will use cooled anti-proton beams with a momentum between 1.5 GeV/c and 15 GeV/c interacting with various targets. This allows to direct form all states of all quantum numbers and measure there widths with an accuracy of a few tens of keV. The experiment will be located at the exceptional Facility for Anti-proton and Ion Research in Germany, which is currently under construction.
The electromagnetic target calorimeter of the PANDA experiment has the challenging aim to detect high energy photons with excellent energy resolution over the full dynamic range from 15 GeV down to a few tens of MeV within a 2T solenoid. To reach this goal, improved PbWo4 scintillator crystals, cooled down to −25°C have been chosen. They provide a fast decay time for highest count rates, short radiation length for compactness, improved light yield for lowest thresholds and excellent radiation hardness. The target calorimeter itself is divided into into a barrel and two
endcaps. The individual crystal will be read out with two precisely matched
large area avalanche photo diodes. In the very inner part of the forward endcap vacuum phototetrodes will be used instead.
The talk will give an overview of the PANDA experiment and focuses on its target calorimeter including the scintillator material and its production status.
Furthermore, the construction and assembly procedure of the barrel part will be presented.

The PANDA experiment at the international FAIR laboratory, currently under construction to expand GSI near Darmstadt, Germany, will investigate fundamental questions of hadron physics in the charm quark energy range. Antiprotons in the 1.5-15 GeV/c momentum range will interact with gas jet or pellet fixed targets. Charged PID for the PANDA target spectrometer will be provided by two DIRC (Detection of Internally Reflected Cherenkov light) detectors. The Endcap Disc DIRC which covers the PANDA forward endcap solid angle range from 5 to 22 degrees polar angle shall positively identify charged kaons and allow kaon-pion separation from 1 up to 4 GeV/c with a separation power of at least 3 standard deviations. The design including highly polished synthetic fused silica, lifetime-enhanced microchannel plate PMTs and fast readout electronics is presented, also the simulation performance of said final detector. Results of the prototype which include the recently introduced TOFPET-ASIC based read-out, and operated in a test beam at DESY in 2016 are shown and compared to Monte Carlo simulations.

PANDA Annual Report 2017

The report gives an overview of the progress in 2017 but also summarizes the goals for the full experiment. It is a document mainly for the collaboration, institute leaders and decision makers. It is not desirable to distribute it by email, because it might contain copyrighted material and we also don't have control about the circulation this way. The file is very large anyhow.

We will print copies for the group leaders for PR and other information purposes and they are hopefully ready latest for the June meeting.

If you find severe errors int he document, please send it to the spokesperson for correction.
